Junior Hockey League - "Overall performance is not at all encouraging"

The Junior Hockey League (JHL) has just come to an end and it should provide a deep "soul searching" exercise for MHF as the future of Malaysian hockey rests with this generation of players. I start this article with a conclusion ie "There is nothing much to talk about the performance of the teams in the JHL". It is sad but it is a fact. The games were played by the teams who were just trying to get the ball to the goalmouths without a distinct style or pattern of play. The basics in hockey including application of some of the new rules were diabolically poor and the players just ended up "robotic" ie told how to play.

The final of the overall title between UniKL and BPSS Thunderbolt provided enough evidence of the state of affairs of the "junior" generation of hockey players. As much as the JHL reflects on the standard of players, it equally reflects the standard of the coaches too. Many would obviously feel hurt by this but it is important we recognise it rather than live in a world of denial. Unless we know the true state of affairs we cannot adopt the necessary strategy to address the issues. We cannot just go down the same road over and over and make it look like everything is fine. If we want to do that then we are just "baffling" ourselves.

Getting back to the final, let me narrate some of the salient points:

  • Both teams did not have a formation of play ie style or pattern.

  • Both teams were charging straight to the goalmouth. In the case of Thunderbolt they were looking for penalty corners while UniKL scarily troubled Thunderbolt except for the 2 goals. Mind you they did not have even 1 penalty corner in the whole game.

  • UniKl adopted a defensive approach and their attack was based on overhead flicks which the Thunderbolt were able to cleanly trap and instantaneously turn them into attack. This provided Thunderbolt the basis of their "waves" of attacks.

  • UniKL scarified their half line and left a "gaping" hole in the centre which Thunderbolt did not know how to capitalise

  • Thunderbolt's national player was playing like the other players ie did not show the calibre of a national player. The Thunderbolt coach obviously did not optimise his ability.

  • Both Thunderbolt and UniKL had a player each who had 2 months stint with a 2nd Division Dutch hockey club. Their performance and skill did not reflect such a stint exposure. Indeed their performance was below par and i wonder whether their stint is a properly planned programme.

  • Thunderbolt despite the waves of attack and numerous penalty corners, did not have any clues how to get the vital goals.

  • Thunderbolt penalty corner "battery" was a disaster as they fumbled on "stopping" the ball on numerous occasions.

  • UniKL had 2 to 3 players who were "passengers" in the game and the coach did not recognise this to make the imminent changes.

  • In both the teams, the "players off the ball" were not moving to create opportunity for passes to be made.

  • In both the teams, the players "recovery' after losing the ball seem to be very slow. More often they were standing and protesting.

  • In both the teams, the players seemed "ill disciplined" as they seemed to be arguing with the decisions of the Umpires. There is no doubt that the standard of umpiring was also bad.

  • UniKL players did not have a clue how to "run down the clock" in the dying hours of the game.

Overall the standard of the game did not reflect the final of a major tournament ie the JHL. The whole thing was an anti-climax. Although MHF added colour with a "live" telecast and the trimmings of prize giving but the game itself raises a question mark on the future of Malaysian hockey.

I wonder what is being done by MHF? They cannot just leave it to the Sports Schools or the State Project Schools or the Project 2013 people. This is an issue that goes to the fundamentals of the concept of "excellence" and probably that is what is lacking from the top to the bottom in majority of the cases. This is what needs to be addressed and that is something i shall cover in another article.

Till then i think it is important that the hierarchy in MHF must engage itself on this matter and undertake the necessary steps to embody the principles of "excellence" for the future of Malaysian hockey. Do not go with the view that the JHL is over and therefore another event in the calender is finished. The truth of the state of hockey arising from the JHL must be addressed.

Unikl could not have 2 or 3 passengers and won the game. Bad analysis . both teams played out but we could have seen ssbp winning if they had been more commited. every Unikl player tried his best to win the game and that may be the reason they won.You are seeing a different kind of game. Some said that it was a boring affair and that is good as this is the step to win internationaly. Assesing performance is too early as the players are being watched by the 2013 coaches and it would have been an extra pressure.

What's most disturbing is that BPSS and BJSS hockey squads have gone thru 5 years of development in Class A facilities (correct me if I'm wrong)nad we still lamenting of poor displays. Were the national sports schools to produce players that shine locally.......

Dear blog writer,
It's written in the history already..Unikl with mostly boys from normal school can beat both sports schools in our country..If some said Unikl got project boys included, but pls bear in mind that Unikl only get the 2nd to 3rd class of project players! The 1st class players in the project squad were come from BPSS! Its not Unikl to be blamed for the not all encouraging (thats u say so, but not me)..Unikl players, coaches, managers and all fans/supporters fully committed to the game and go all out with what they only have with full of passion, heart and soul to win the final..Whatever the tactics, systems, technics, players inside, p.c constraint, etc, Unikl do their best to win the final..Thats encouraging with full of commitment and responsible by them!!

The worst thing to be focussed here, both sports schools BJSS and BPSS with all the support technically, financially, facilities and tactically from MHF, MSN, KPM, TNB Thunderbolt,Project coach, etc. were the losers! What happenned with their development? Premature?

Surely we would bring back Sarjit and Rajan together with you as Manager to coach BJSS with Prakash as consultant.

You and the gang try to win the junior league.

Ok be happy.

Rajan's tenure over - he cannot coach nor does have ability to coach. He needs Thailand female supporters to be there in the stadium for his effective coaching. Can MHF import few supporters for him? He was thrown out even from Thailand.

We dont want another money lending activity and betting to take place among hockey players - so better Sarjit concentrate on his buisness than coaching. If not, ask all the 10/2 to shift their buisness to MHF office so he can run his buisness directly under his supervision from the stadium itself. MHF please allot a room for him in the stadium so that he could accomodate all 10/2 and rookies for money lending and betting activities.

Poor Prakash gave up - as he did nto want to be associated with under 16 team. He only wish to be the coach of Sapura, as he can beat klhc. His target is only limited to beat klhac. He along with his BJSS administrator can paint the school walls and building with 2013 project coaches faces and instruct the boys to hit the ball on these project coaches dummy face. Because they find happines in tainting the character of these project coaches. please ask your coach to use these play cards of 2013 coaches faces instead of training with hockey balls.

Vicky is still a player only. Yet to mature into a coach. He has long way to come in as a national coach. as he still can play for Johor in Razak cup for another 10 years under one of the above mentioned former national coach. So Vicky please wait till your turn comes. Till then, you play for JB and at the same time do your buisness. Honestly you get more money in your buisness than coaching national hockey team. If you still want to ach the national team, please also learn the tactics of 10/2 from the former national coach and do practice it along with your coaching also.

X coach or Y coach or Z coach.

SSBP COACHES KNEW HOW THE UNIKL MIDFIELD PLAYED AND THERE WERE NOT MUCH GAP FOR SSBP TO PENETRATE. THE FACT IS THAT SSBP MIDFIELD DID NOT AS WELL AS UNIKL.

Please dont call Unikl boys as class 2 or 3. According to the 2013coaches there are no class 2 or 3, all are class A1.
Further there were about 6 or 7 kl players who have been winning age group tournament regulary.

While reading this blog, was wondering! Rajan,sarjit,prakash,murali- all this coaches was given chances and failed. As human,or as gentleman u should understand, once u failed, u should give chances to others to excel, why ppl dont understand?
We as hockey fans happy that this year junior league was 3 way team competition, earlier years we know that there was only 1 team to look at. At least this year, we have other strong team competing.
And also,we have more junior players played in the senior league last season. UNIKL gain was last senior league when they start to compete, it was the exposure they played in senior league that make them champion the junior league. If BJSS boys allowed to play last season in senior league, they also will gain but they did not because their stupid policy...
BPSS on the other hand, played the wrong tactics vs UNIKL. Yes,they have good players but did not perform as a team, too much individual game. Faizal saari played the worst game for BPSS, he did not show that he is a national material...

Mr Sarjit singh and Mr Rajan, your collegue is killing you. Your own friends are using your name to benefit them. Why cant you see, especially Negeri and penang ppl are using you. All the teacher that close to you, they are the most dangerous ppl. they are spoiling your names so that they can get the good name. They(others in your group) thinks you are the stupid one, easy to be conned.
So, please act.

SARJIT AND RAJAN COULD BE REPLACE, WHY 2013 COACHES GETTING EMOTIONAL. YOU ALL CANNOT BEAT THEIR RECORD. LEGEND FOREVER. PRAKASH AND VICKY ARE SUPERB COACHES. MHF NEED TO REVAMP.

hahaha, becos of prakash,we dont have the chance to coach any tournament. He is so arrogant and im happy this year he lose...at least now we can fight in KPM to coach teams....
BJSS coach- no brains, very bias, just thinking of him self,i think he will get his datukship from penang soon, becos he always take penang boys to bkt jalil school.
sarjit singh-one of the best player in the country we had, but got spoil becos arrogant
rajan-very lucky coach, he had luck to win games until he join this stupid group.God took away the luck.
vicky-up and coming coach but sometime very business minded. He alwiz up to something.

so...what else you want to know?

Sarjit still the best as National Coach.

Stephen+Sarjit will be a good combination for Malaysian Hockey.

Sarjit with tactically brilliant + Stephen with technically brilliant with discipline method.

Why still MHF/MSN cant see it?

Anonymous said...

If we talk about FAILED, cant we see that one of the current National Coach also a FAILED coach?

The worst, this coward coach withdraw as M'sian Jr Coach at the very last minute during previous JB JrWC because of no self confident of the deliverables target. Then he join his friend (also a FAILED Coach) with M'sian Woman Team.

Suddenly, he being appointed as Mens National Coach and failed to bring Malaysian Team qualified for the recent WC at New Delhi as per his deliverable target.

And now, the FAILED coach still in the Mens National Team!

No wonder our Mens National Team most of the time also FAILED to deliver as it being coached by one of the FAILED Coach!

-Don't simply talk about failed-

Sarjit tactically brilliant? haha he must have brains to be brilliant. He could not pass FIH basic level course. Level 1,2,3 etc he passed beacuse all bhais were in the coaching committee then. If he was tactically brilliant in hockey, the players would have supported his cause. In the recent world cup at delhi Sarjit was seen as a consultant for Pakistan team which ended up last in the world cup. To be brilliant you must have brains. But to gamble and to be 10/2 you need not have brains. Ask head injured guys to just keep counting the cash bills and no more coaching.

Yes,
Stephen + Sarjit will become a good combination

Women hockey coach Yahaya in trouble. For the first time in the history women hockey - the girls went against the dictatorship of the most useless hockey coach in Malaysia. He thinks, he is quite knowledgeable. Whenver this man poked his nose in BPSS during the JHL, the team neve won. This year he did not have a hand and BPSS won in JHL. He is the most political coach and his (word deleted) approach has made the women team to slip down few steps in terms of performance. He joined the former Indian coach as assistant while preparing for last Asian games and went down to topple down the same Indian coach who helped him to get enrolled as a coach for women, and became head coach in Qatar Asian Games. The MWHA secretary is having a nice time as she does not have time to organise any women league but finds a way to play in mens league and make people happy as if she has conducted the league. If she continues as MWHA sec, I am sure that women hockey will be burried within no time. Both coach and secretary should be thrown out.

Dear Anon. June 9, 2010 2:54 PM with part of the comments ''Whenever this man poked his nose in BPSS during the JHL, the team never won. This year he did not have a hand and BPSS won in JHL.''

Even this man no more coaching BPSS on paper, but plz remember his subordinate a.k.a WR, the teacher coach still there and still coaching BPSS by remote control from him!
Thats why this year BPSS still worse and very very very lucky got the very last minute DRAW 2-2 goal (30 seconds before end) with Unikl to become League Champion! So Lucky! Thankful to TNB-Thunderbolt guidance also to supersede the Remote Control instruction.
And then, SSBP play so horrible like a normal school children in the JHL2010 Overall Final and this time LOST to Unikl!!
After 5-6 years BPSS still cannot be a respectful champions in the MJHL even with fantastic players in their list!
BPSS really need a good teacher coach IMMEDIATELY who can THINK as a coach and NOT by remote control...
