MCA - Umpires saga seem to continue.

Below is a mail i received on what the writer refers as "MCA against Umpires 2"..If what he says is the truth then MCA seem to have adopted a policy of suppressing issues from being brought to the forefront. If it is not, then the writer must know it is not proper to make wrongful accusations.

I will not make any comments as i have yet to independently verify the matter. I will not invoke past incidents to form an opinion because it would mean i am not giving each case its merit. So if anyone in the Financial Committee or the Council could enlighten us,it would be helpful...

Below is the text of the mail:

"MCA is at it again. In the last email I had mentioned of the father and the impertinent son, i..e. the Hon. Sect. and the National Captain abusing the umpires. Reports were sent by the umpire concerned to MCA regarding the abuse.

Surprisingly, this matter was discussed in a Financial Committee meeting and the whole thing was hushed up. The Hon. Sect. told the umpire concerned that the matter was discussed at the Financial Committee meeting and no further action shall be taken. I am sure the Financial Committee meeting is not the right setting to discuss this matter.

The unhappy umpire however, called the Chairman of the Umpires and Scorers Board and told him of the Financial Committee’s meeting and decision. He requested that this matter to be channelled at the Council or EXCO meeting.

MCA had their Council meeting on Sunday 14th September 2008. Ironically both the Hon. Sect. and the Umpires and Scorers Board Chairman did not show up at the Council meeting. A Good Samaritan from the Council brought up the issue but it was put to halt by the acting Competitions Chairman.

"Looks like the Hon. Sect., the Umpires and Scorers Board Chairman and the Acting Competitions Chairman are scratching each other’s back.

All the current happening has created a sensitivity of unhappiness among the umpiring circle.

Apart from that, a rumour is going around mentioning that a Vice President of MCA has requested the Asian Cricket Council to conduct an umpires course in Malaysia specially for the Pakistanis who are in Malaysia so that MCA can use these Pakistanis to replace the Malaysian Umpires. I hope that it remains as rumours.

Looking at the events happening in MCA, my humble opinion to this whole episode is, " The whole Committee of MCA right from the President downwards should resign enblock". This Committee is of no use to anybody.

This the problem with Malaysian cricket some of the exco mmbr.go for the post to make own agenda. Whats this the Umpires stand in the hot sun to apply the law of cricket but at end of day if his son or reletives team don't win then they start scolding them. Why?
The president should much2 earlier because he is not sweeteable for the post how many times times Umpires report but every time he give the excusees. But the rumor that MCA asking ACC to conduct course so the pakistanies can Umpire the game then its very bad.

Oh well....maybe the Umpires should consider filling up the seats in MCA after all since they simply love being in the limelight. Not enough attention from everywhere else so use MCA to grab all you can get. Very entertaining. Keep it up. Hopefully your fans will have new episodes of this drama. Maybe in another match, umpires can instigate and stir something up again by making some smart decisions to provoke the people. Oh and not forgetting, demand for an apology or actions to be taken. Bravo! Lastly, do correct the English or maybe refrain from posting this up if it is does not fit the language requirements of this blog.

Dear Gandhi,

How can the Hon. Sect. so bravely and blatantly react in such a way? Does he think that he can do whatever he likes? Most probably the President doesn't know a lot of things what the Hon. Sect. is doing or not doing? Somebody please mail this blog site to the president.

Integrity and transparency in running an association should be the utmost virtue to be upheld by the committee (Exco) members. The council members have elected them therefore they (Exco) are responsible to answer queries fielded during the meeting. If as alleged regarding the absence of the two members, concrete reasons should be provided failing which they will be accused of evading the members as the matter has been made known to them well in advance.

Members of the council should keep track of this 'saga' and not let the matter be swept under the carpet or classified as NFA. The proper channel / avenue has been used as in the council meeting and not through anonymous postings in this site, so the ball is on the elected members feet now to investigate the matter before it starts to snowball.

On the issue of 'fast tracking' the foreign cricket mercenaries as umpires, lets hope it remains as a rumour as thousand of ringgits have been spent on training and educating locals who volunteered to become umpires for the love of the game, will go down the drain, which brings us to another issue. Every year without fail, umpiring courses have been organised by the ACC in Kuala Lumpur, thanks to the generousity of the host. If the Malaysian umpires are that bad, how could ACC have passed them?
The Malaysian scorers have been hailed as one of the best in Asia, so is it the other way round for the Malaysian cricket umpires so much so that foreigners need to used? On a lighter side, maybe MCA should advertise the posts and we'll find hundreds of the foreign workers from the subcontinent queing up at Kinrara instead of hanging out at KLCC on a Sunday.

If MCA is getting the Pakistanis to umpire, way to go!!! Our umpires are useless and not familiar with the laws of cricket. Player handles the ball with his hand (preventing it from hitting the stumps) and not given out. Umpire gives out and then calls for a wide at the same instant. U call that mistakes.....that’s lack of common sense and no clue of the game!! Umpire inspects the ground and call for play, there after calls off play without any justification or any ball being bowled.......that’s Malaysian umpires for u!!!

Players are also under the sun, not only umpires!!! (Above comment)

The umpires are killing the cricket in Malaysia.

Dear Gandhi,

The Umpires need not fill up the MCA seats as they have their own association. Malaysian Associaiton of Cricket Umpires (MACU) was doing well during their days. Though MACU is demised but rumours are going around that a new associaiton was formed to look into the affairs of umpires and scorers. I am sure the umpires and scorers are not power crazy to go for MCA seats. MCA should look into all matters seriously not only to favour the players and officials. The Umpires & Scorers Board Chairman should be very concerned about these problems rather than keeping quite or wanting to be in the good books and drinking partner with the Hon. Sect. The Umpires & Scorers Board Chairman is a real chicken. He is only brave when the 'spirit' has gone into him.

Lets not get personal with the committee members. They have volunteered to serve for the country and sport. One of them even has to travel down the country just to attend meetings. Members of the respective state associations should by now aware who are the genuine workers and who have personal agendas when seeking positions in the national body.
For a national body who only organises less than 20 matches a year, cant even solve trivial (no offence meant to the affected umpires)problems, how are the administration gong to propel the sport to a higher level?
To the detractor of the standard of umpiring in this country (i.e comments .....umpires are killing the game), are you any better as a player? The umpires never use the excuse of standing under the hot sun,so for you to compare with the players only reflect your shallowness as a person. The game has failed to instill positive character in you. Pathetic!

Comment no.8,

Firstly let me correct you there, I am not a player. So I don’t know how good I am at the game but I certainly do know simple basic rules and laws of the game.

I only mention about standing under the sun because comment number 2 mentions that ‘umpires stands in the hot sun to apply law’. So the players are in the shade while playing??

ACC recognizes our umpires so much so that not even 1 umpire from Malaysia is in the elite panel. Where else, our neighboring countries have few. It’s not important to pass theoretically (exam based question) but fail to apply them when the situation matters. After each match, there will be a captain’s report on the umpires. Pls try to get them and read it. It might enlighten you with some ‘encouraging’ display of the umpires.

I have nothing against umpires personally, but they have made blunders which have made teams lose, players get deprive from performing etc but this umpires still deny the fact that they are in the wrong.

Pathetic is the right word for the umpiring standards in Malaysia!!!

Gandhi, said...

While there seem to be an on-going bout on issues relating to players and umpires, but no soul seem to be giving worthwhile suggestions to improve the overall standard of cricket.

It is easy to find faults and extremely difficult to find the right words to express what could be done.

We live in a "fault finding" community, so how is the game going to improve?

Sad but true, the standards of umpiring in Malaysia has gone from bad to worse. One can accept that umpires do mistakes but these are blunders which have ruined the game. No body is questioning about caught behind, lbw, stumping decisions. Handling the ball by a batsman, calling wide after giving out are pure ignorance of the law by these umpires.

As much as you can say about the players, they have been in the elite trophy and have moved up in their ranks. 2 players have emerged as best bowler and batsmen for this year’s event. Few years back, we had 2 players selected for the ACC eleven. The players have been progressing. For a team that had 3 months coaching prior to the ACC trophy 2008, they did well. Everybody wrote them off and thought they were going to be demoted to a lower division but the moved up a rank.

What has the umpires done?? Please enlighten me. They only can qualify as 3rd umpires for any tournament organized by ACC in Malaysia (Malaysia being host country). If the tournament is organized away from Malaysia, they don’t have any change to be part of the elite group. They only qualify to umpire the ACC Women’s tournament and not even the ACC U’19s.

I have played enough cricket to say that the standard of umpiring in Malaysia is below par.

The only way to improve the standards of umpiring in Malaysia is to bring umpires from neighboring countries or test nation countries.

Dear Gandhi,
If the Umpires & Scorers Board Committee do their part, then the problems highlighted here would have been if not solved, minimised. Firstly, an iventory of the current and active umpires should be updated and maintained. Correspondingly the captain's report (as mentioned by the last anonymous comment) should be reviewed by the Board members and should any discrepancies or adverse match reports submitted, then the umpires should be hauled up for inquiry or noted. New umpires should go through the hierachy process like the hockey umpires where they are gradually exposed from the junior / lower tier matches before being promoted to the senior level. Likewise the with umpiring fees.
Players reported for misconduct during or after the match likewise should be subjected for inquiry by the disciplinary board. Had these measures been taken then I think we need not waste our time arguing and pointing fingers and instead channel our resources towards improving the game.
Dear Gandhi, we are not a punitive society by and large, its our inability to act proactively and in a just way that have led us to this situation.

MCA seems to be more interested in using foreigners than locals. Now they want to use the Pakistanis. Earlier they brought a Sri Lankan coach who was here earning money without any work permit. They brought 7 other Sri Lankan players to play in the Franchise League again earning money without work permit.

Wonder does the following Govt. Dept is aware of it?
1. Immigration Dept.
2. Inland Revenue Dept.
3. Labour Dept.

I think this dept. should be notified.

Dear Gandhi,

One of the comment by the anonymous is absolutely right.
He said If the Umpires & Scorers Board Committee do their part, then the problems highlighted here would have been if not solved, minimised.

The last umpires and scorers board meeting was held in September 2007. There has been so many incidents since then, but the chairman is not bothered. Refresher courses requested were turned down. There was only one umpires course in February 2007, nothing yet since then. A course was requested this year but was turned down. Umpires need to be upgraded and promoted. But anyway since the new association is approved they will take care of all this matters. It is of no use he respresenting the umpires at the MCA.

Pls notify the relevant govt. dept. Pls go and do it if you have enough evidence or guts!!!!

Don't ask anybody else to do it, you should personally do it!!

Pls update us.......we will be waiting.

Anonymous said...

Dear Anonymous,

I don't need any proof or evidence. All I need to do is write a letter of complain to the various department. They will look into the matter. If the documents are right then everything is solved. If the documents are not right then MCA will have the headache. I am not doing it now. I am waiting for the right moment. So don't worry brother it will come. Bye!!!

Anonymous said...

I am so scared, I am sure MCA is shitting bricks.......can't wait for the moment to happen.

To Anonymous comment no.6.

Maybe you should become an umpire. A lot of people talk outside the field, that is wrong, this is not right, but dare not go into the field to umpire. I know of a person who does that. He will keep score but complain about the umpires. But he will not walk into the field to umpire. He was listed as an umpire but never umpired any games. He acts as though he knows the law more than anybody else in Malaysia. Though he never passed any exam till date. This person is no guts, but a coward.
I appreciate the umpires who walk into the field and give decisions, there may be some wrong decisions but experience will teach them. But you people are killing the umpires before they get well versed with it.

Anonymous said...

So you agree that the umpires are useless........

For one to be an umpire, the least he should know is the law of the game. That doesn't need experience!

Who ever you are referring to doesn’t spoil or rather change an outcome of a match. Umpires who take the field are supposed to be equipped and knowledgeable.

Anonymous said...

Hey i know that guy, who you said. beleive or not he knows the law of cricket very well and same time he have cricket sense also. He was a cricketer also. You can see him always support players. Some umpires in this country dont even have basic knowledge. If umpires course is running by those who dont have cricket knowledge, offcourse nobody can pass. some umpires in this country dont have basic knowledge, but there are Grade A umpires. Its really joke of the millenium. Do you know malaysin cricketers have more knowledge than some umpires in this country. Some umpires in this country always argue in mistakes. Please learn from mistakes. If not all knowlegeable umpires will start doing scoring like you said.

Why does everyone have to worry about how umpires are destroying the game in Malaysia! Its very simple stuff,we cant play cricket,we rather talk big about past umpire's performance rather then the team's present or future performance.

Come on guys, umpires are human being's after all and they are bound to make mistakes.Yes some mistakes might have been very oblivious but then again, its a mistake which can be corrected!

Maybe the father and son combination that run's MCA should look into this! After all MCA is no more an association that runs cricket for the country, its more like a family business for those two power-crazy people!
